HISTORIOGRAPHY OF HADITH IN THE MUTAQADDIMIN ERA (2ND-4TH CENTURIES)

This study discusses the historiography of hadith in the era of mutaqaddimin (2nd-4th centuries AH) which became an important era in the development of hadith. In this era, hadiths, which were previously more commonly narrated orally, began to be codified massively and systematically to maintain their authenticity. The effort to codify hadith was officially ordered by Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz (d. 101 H) to governors and hadith experts in various Islamic jurisdictions. The research method in this paper is qualitative with a descriptive-analytical approach to find out the history of hadith writing in the era of mutaqaddimin. In the 2nd century AH, hadith began to be systematically codified based on the order of certain chapters with hadith material that was still mixed between the hadith of the Prophet, the opinions of the companions and the fatwa of tabi'in. Then in the 3rd century A.D., it was considered the peak of hadith codification, where the codification of hadith was carried out systematically and had separated the hadith of the Prophet from others, there was also an assessment of the degree of hadith. In this century, the Pole of as-Sittah emerged which has become a source of reference for Islamic teachings until now. Then in the 4th century A.H., developing from the previous century in addition to codification in the form of sahih and sunan, it was also present in the form of mustadrak, mustakhraj and mu'jam
