Abstract

Anger is one of the various basic human emotions that if not managed properly has the potential to cause destructive impacts for both individuals and society, in Islam, especially in the Shia tradition, anger is not something that is eliminated but rather as an affective impulse that is important to be controlled consciously and meaningfully, this study aims to examine the strategy of emotional regulation in the hadiths of the Shia school, especially the concept of holding back anger (kadzm al-Ghaidzh) and its relevance analysis with James J. Gross's emotional regulation model. Through a qualitative-analytical approach to the hadiths in the book Al-Kafi, this study shows that: in the Shia tradition offers a layered emotional regulation strategy that includes controlling behavioral responses, physiological interventions with changes in body position, interpersonal regulation to managing situations through the principle of taqiyah in the context of power relations. Based on these findings, it shows that there is a conformity with the response modulation and situational selection models in Gross's view, and expands it with ethical, spiritual and social dimensions. In the Shia tradition, emotional regulation is viewed as a reflective choice that has an orientation towards self-safety, dignity and stability of social relations, this shows the important contribution of Shia hadith in the development of contemporary Islamic psychology that is contextual and sustainable.
