Abstract

Religious moderation is an important concept in maintaining harmonious religious life within a pluralistic society, particularly in higher education institutions characterized by diverse religious and intellectual backgrounds. The main problems addressed in this study include the persistence of exclusive religious attitudes, low levels of tolerance, and the influence of extremist ideologies disseminated through digital media, which may threaten social harmony. This study aims to examine the fundamental concept of religious moderation, including its definition, foundations, principles, objectives, and challenges in its implementation in higher education. The research employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method by analyzing relevant books, scholarly articles, and official documents. The findings indicate that religious moderation is understood as a way of practicing religion that emphasizes balance, justice, and tolerance in understanding and applying religious teachings. Religious moderation is supported by strong theological, philosophical, social, and constitutional foundations and is reflected in principles such as national commitment, tolerance, rejection of violence, and respect for local wisdom. The implementation of religious moderation in higher education is expected to foster inclusive religious attitudes among students and contribute to the creation of a peaceful social life.
