Abstract

Liturgy is a vital part of church life, serving as a means for the congregation to worship, build fellowship with God and one another, hear the Word of God, and express their faith in daily life. Liturgy is understood not merely as the order of service for worship, but also as a form of ministry and the congregation's response to God's work. This article discusses the history and definition of liturgy, its general structure, and the various forms that have evolved within the life of the church. These forms include traditional or standard liturgy, contemporary liturgy, charismatic or Pentecostal liturgy, creative liturgy, and contextual liturgy. The discussion reveals that each liturgical form possesses distinct characteristics ranging from its structure to its manner of execution shaped by tradition, theological understanding, the congregation's needs, the changing times, and cultural context. Nevertheless, every form of liturgy shares the same fundamental purpose: to direct the congregation toward God, build faith and fellowship, and encourage believers to live lives characterized by love, service, and witness within society.
